Bathroom waterproofing is the water-management layer below the tile. Before a shower or tub surround is covered, the installer should be able to show how the system handles walls, floor slope, corners, pipe penetrations, the valve, and the drain. Tile and grout create the finished surface; they are not the only barrier protecting the framing.
Why waterproofing comes before the pretty part
A bathroom can look finished while the vulnerable work is hidden. Water reaches grout joints, changes direction at corners, and finds small gaps around valves and pipe penetrations. If the wet-area assembly has no continuous path to the drain or no sealed transition at the floor, the tile pattern cannot correct it later.
The point of a pre-tile check is not to micromanage a crew. It is to make the water path visible while corrections are still possible. Once tile, trim, glass, and paint cover the work, the same correction can mean demolition.
What should a waterproofed shower look like?
It should look like a continuous, intentional assembly rather than a few isolated patches. The exact products may be a sheet membrane, liquid-applied membrane, waterproof board system, or a traditional pan-and-mortar assembly. The product family matters less than following one compatible method from the shower base through the walls, corners, penetrations, and drain.
- The shower base slopes toward the drain without a flat pocket where water can sit.
- Wall waterproofing covers the wet area to the height required by the selected system and design.
- Inside corners, changes of plane, seams, and fasteners are treated with the system's approved materials.
- The valve, shower arm, niche, bench, curb, and other penetrations have compatible seals or details.
- The waterproofing connects to the drain assembly instead of stopping at the tile edge.

What to check at the shower floor
1. The slope is planned before the drain is covered
Stand at the doorway and look toward the drain. The floor should be shaped to move water there, and the drain height should be coordinated with the finished tile thickness. A curbless shower adds more pressure to the floor plan because the bathroom floor and shower entry must meet without creating a puddle or trip point.
2. The drain and membrane are compatible
Some systems connect to a bonding-flange drain; traditional assemblies use a different pan and clamping-drain detail. Mixing components without a manufacturer-approved transition is where a simple-looking drain can become the weakest part of the assembly. Ask which method is being used and how the membrane meets the drain.
3. The curb or entry has a finished waterproof path
A curb has more than one face and more than one corner. The top, inside face, outside face, and ends need to be treated as part of the wet-area design. For a curbless entry, ask how the waterproofing continues beyond the shower so splash does not stop at an unprotected transition.
What to check on walls, niches, and benches
Niches and benches add useful storage and comfort, but they also add corners and penetrations. The niche should be framed, sloped where the system requires it, waterproofed continuously, and planned around the tile module. A bench should drain toward the shower, not toward the wall or the room.
Before tile starts, take a photo of each wall and label the valve, shower head, niche, bench, and future glass line. This is useful documentation for you and a practical way to remember where plumbing and reinforcement are hidden after the finish is complete.
What about the bathroom fan?
Waterproofing handles liquid water in the shower. Ventilation handles moisture in the air. You need both. The EPA recommends that bathroom exhaust be directed outdoors rather than into an attic or another interior space; its remodeling guidance also recommends checking that the fan actually exhausts enough air, not merely that its motor makes noise. In an Indiana bathroom, a fan that runs only after the mirror has fogged is already behind the moisture. Plan the switch, timer, duct route, and grille location with the electrical and ceiling work.
Questions to ask before tile installation
- Which waterproofing method is being used, and where can I read its installation instructions?
- How is the shower floor sloped, and how does the membrane connect to the drain?
- How are the niche, bench, curb, valve, shower arm, and glass line sealed?
- Which materials are used at seams, corners, and changes of plane?
- When is the assembly ready for tile, and what evidence shows that it is complete?
A clear answer names the system and the detail. “We seal it all” is not a method. If you are comparing contractors, ask the same questions of each one and record the answers with the proposal.
