A range hood is functional equipment, but in an open kitchen it’s also frequently the single largest visual focal point in the room — sitting directly above the range at eye level from most sightlines. Custom hood design has become one of the more requested elements in our full kitchen remodels, and here’s how the decisions actually break down.
Insert vs. fully custom shell
A hood insert is the actual ventilation mechanism — blower, filters, lighting — installed inside a custom-built surround made from wood, plaster, tile, or metal to match the kitchen’s design language, rather than a visible off-the-shelf metal hood. This is the approach we use most often for a genuinely custom look, since it lets the hood’s appearance be designed specifically for your kitchen rather than chosen from a manufacturer’s catalog of standard shapes.
Sizing: width and CFM both matter
The hood should extend at least a few inches beyond the range on both sides to properly capture rising heat and grease, not just match the range’s exact width. CFM (airflow capacity) needs to scale with the range’s BTU output — a wide, beautiful custom hood with an underpowered blower looks right but doesn’t actually do its job, which is a mistake we see in some prior renovations we’re asked to fix.
Material options for a custom surround
Plaster: a popular, softly textured option that reads as high-end and pairs especially well with organic, warm kitchen palettes; it requires more careful maintenance than paint since it’s more porous.
Wood, matched to cabinetry: creates a seamless, built-in look when the hood surround uses the same species and finish as the surrounding cabinets; requires heat-resistant construction and clearances from the range per code.
Tile: works well as a focal-point material, especially with a bold pattern, and pairs naturally with a full-height backsplash treatment behind the range.
Metal (copper, brass, blackened steel): the most traditional “visible hood” look, and increasingly requested in warmer metal tones that coordinate with brass or matte black fixture packages elsewhere in the kitchen.
Makeup air: the code requirement people don’t expect
Higher-CFM range hoods (generally above 400 CFM, though thresholds vary by jurisdiction) can require a makeup air system — a mechanism that brings replacement air into the house to balance what the hood is exhausting, preventing negative pressure that can cause issues like backdrafting from other combustion appliances. This is a real code and safety consideration we evaluate any time a homeowner wants a professional-style range with a correspondingly powerful hood, not an optional upsell.
Lighting integration
Most custom hood inserts include integrated LED lighting aimed down at the cooktop, which functions as your primary task lighting for that specific work zone — worth coordinating with your broader kitchen lighting plan rather than treating as a separate decision.
